A routine EEG records the brain’s electrical activity over a short session using a full clinical montage of scalp electrodes. It is a first-line neurodiagnostic study for a broad range of clinical questions — from unexplained spells to follow-up of a known condition.
Studies can be performed awake, drowsy, or after sleep deprivation, and may include activation procedures such as hyperventilation or photic stimulation where clinically appropriate to increase diagnostic yield.
